What are 3Bee's Biodiversity Oases?
3Bee's Biodiversity Oases represent the perfect fusion of nature and technology: they are physical and digital places that allow for the preservation and regeneration of biodiversity. Urban and agroforestry habitats that serve as refuges for pollinators and native flora: they are created in areas and soils of low biodiversity located throughout European countries. Businesses can become custodians of these spaces, implementing measurable biodiversity conservation projects and engaging their stakeholders at the same time. Through IoT technology, project data converges in the virtual oasis: anyone can thus monitor the corporate Biodiversity Oasis in real-time and stay updated on its actual impact. But what makes these oases even more unique? The innovative technologies by 3Bee that populate them. Let's discover what they are and their role within 3Bee's Biodiversity Oases.
What is it and how does 3Bee's Flora technology work?
Flora is a neural network system developed in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) that analyzes plant diversity and the potential biodiversity of the ecosystem based on the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). Using ESA's high-resolution Sentinel-II satellite data, we can define land cover and plant species with an 8m x 8m resolution. We accurately assess the floral diversity in an area, as well as the pollinator abundance and potential nectar production. This way, 3Bee provides partners with a clear understanding of the potential habitat of their site or reference area.
What is 3Bee's Spectrum technology and how does it work?
Spectrum is an IoT sensor that "listens" to the environment, enabling the detection and classification of biodiversity based on frequency, identifying specific species such as bees, pollinating insects, and birds. The device is easy to install and self-sustains through an integrated solar panel. The battery can last up to 2 months even without sunlight. It requires no maintenance, and data is automatically collected and sent to the cloud via integrated 2G/4G connectivity. Flora and Spectrum are the technologies deployed by 3Bee to perform "biodiversity calculation" with the Element-E certified biomonitoring protocol.
What is 3Bee Hive-Tech and how does it work?
Hive-Tech is an IoT system applied to beehives, collecting biometric information from the bee colony and analyzing the environment's quality. The device gathers all relevant colony data (weight, temperature, humidity, sound intensity), which are then analyzed using artificial intelligence to determine the apiary's health. Data from the device can be integrated with lab sampling and analysis to detect the presence of pesticides or heavy metals. Thanks to Hive-Tech, we monitor environmental parameters useful for analyzing the surrounding biodiversity and the health of pollinators, with the goal of creating a network of sentinels throughout Europe.
What is Polly X by 3Bee and how does it work?
Polly X is the shelter for solitary bees (osmies): an IoT device that monitors a range of important environmental indicators. In addition to ambient temperature, the system assesses air quality. Air quality data include the concentration of particulate matter in the air, which can have adverse effects on human health and the environment. Eleven quantities are monitored, including density, number concentration, and average particle size in nanometers, including PM10 and PM2.5. As with Hive-tech, data can be monitored in real time and transparently through the 3Bee app, and know whether the air we breathe daily is healthy.
